Golf the Winner As Tenerife Triumph In Ryder Cup Island Challenge

What a fitting end to the fifth season of the Tenerife and La Gomera Golf Circuit, the short trip across the water saw 16 of their amateurs overcome their Gran Canaria hosts by a 16 -8 scoreline. The Canarian Golf Federation set up the Ryder Cup style contest as a way to build ties between the two groups of enthusiasts and over the weekend of 15 and 16 October that spirit was always present amid some closely fought games. The El Salobre course in Las Palmas ensured that both teams enjoyed the unique challenge after successful seasons for each home circuit.

The seeds of victory were sown on the first day in the team play clashes as Tenerife ran up a 6.5 to 1.5 margin  thanks to winning 6 of the 8 games with the mens premier category split. Things were a bit closer on the Sunday over mainly individual games that teed off from the 1st and 10th tee to ensure the flow of play. Tenerife kept ahead by 9.5 to 6.5 but there was a notable victory for Teresa Hernández and Marí Carmen Cabrera of the home side against Francisca Martín and María Isabel Cabrera.

The trophy was lifted by Tenerife but both sets of players enjoyed the experience and will be hungry to repeat or reverse the result next year.
