It was clear to all who attended the Tenerife Ladies Match Play at Golf Las Americas, earlier this year, that the whole event ran smoothly and the level of organisation was appreciated by players, sponsors, and spectators. Deporte & Business  experts in event management  have officially recognised the effort put in by naming Golf Las Americas as the best course in Spain for tournament organisation.

The competition was severe with long standing winners like Reserva de Sotogrande and La Sella Golf getting a lot of backing as usual. The award is judged on many factors such as professionalism of course staff, interaction with players, facilities provided for players and media, and the level of comfort felt by the players. Golf Las Americas manager Joan Pifferer will accept the trophy in Madrid and he paid tribute to all who contributed towards the major win.

It’s a tough act to follow but Golf Las Americas is determined to push to improve on its already high standards, the accolades are very welcome but making golfers feel welcome is always a priority.

The seeds of victory were sown on the first day in the team play clashes as Tenerife ran up a 6.5 to 1.5 margin  thanks to winning 6 of the 8 games with the mens premier category split. Things were a bit closer on the Sunday over mainly individual games that teed off from the 1st and 10th tee to ensure the flow of play. Tenerife kept ahead by 9.5 to 6.5 but there was a notable victory for Teresa Hernández and Marí Carmen Cabrera of the home side against Francisca Martín and María Isabel Cabrera.

The trophy was lifted by Tenerife but both sets of players enjoyed the experience and will be hungry to repeat or reverse the result next year.

Announcing their scheme in Las Palmas the federation explained that initially it would apply to the province of Gran Canaria but plans were well advanced to apply the same techniques to Tenerife very soon. Oscar Garzon an established professional player and part of the federations coaching team explained that young players were being chosen from the 11 to 25 year age range for two hour Saturday morning training schools under four technical coaches covering technique, physical and psychological training. The young golfers will be selected from the previous years rankings for Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Lessons will take place at the Las Palmeras golf course but once a month they get to experience another course in the Gran Canaria province.

Psychological coach for the programme, Heriberto Rodríguez, has helped many professional players and will pass on his knowledge to the students. That will include how to deal with pressures caused by the players own demanding standards as well as outside pressures during the course of a game. The future of Canarian golf is in good hands and we will hopefully see a new generation of professional players emerging.

New figures from the Canarian Institute of Statistics show that golf is more popular than ever in the Canary Islands, last year 358,730 of the 10,551, 445 visitors played golf at one of the 23 courses around the islands and 203,963 came exclusively to play. If you want to make a weekend of it, Hotel Arona Gran in Los Cristianos is offering a two or three night stay for just 50 euros per person per night for half board accomodation. That deal includes green fees for players and accompanying persons. If you just want to enjoy the golf tournament, you can book direct with Golf Las Americas , green fees will cost you 45 euros per person. There is also a Facebook event for the tournament where you can find other players that will be challenging you.

The stage is set for a feast of ladies golf as the Tenerife Ladies Open comes to Buenavista Golf in the stunning setting of Tenerife’s north west coast. From Thursday 1st July to Sunday 4th July, 126 top players will compete on one of the most testing courses.

The players have just finished at the Portugal Open where Australian Karen Lunn emerged the winner on 204 thanks to a seven under par final round of 65 to beat Englands Trish Johnson into second place. Both will be heading for Tenerife as well as last years winner Felicity Johnson from Birmingham. Last year Felicity won in the south at Golf Costa Adeje and she is determined to hold on to her title. Make a date in your diary, Tenerife Ladies Open 2010 will take centre stage from 1st to 4th July at the Buenavista Golf course on the north west of Tenerife.

The European Tour event grows in stature every year and this time will boast 275,000 euros in prize money. The field will again include the best players around and a clutch of former winners and runners up. Last year at Golf Costa Adeje it all went down to the final hole as Becky Brewerton from Wales eventually had to give second best to Birmingham’s Felicity Johnson.

Five holes hug the wild and rugged coast of the Buenavista course and the Teno mountain range in the background will add to the wow factor as television viewers tune in all around the world.
