The cream of Spanish golf will be gathering at Abama Golf on 13 and 14 January for the fourth annual Pro Am Memorial Maria Garcia Estrada. The tournament is a tribute and a fundraiser for the popular Santa Cruz born golfer who died from Sarcoma cancer in September 2005. It’s a practical way of honouring her memory as the Maria Garcia Estrada Foundation raises funds for research and an eventual cure for this aggressive form of cancer that took her life at the age of 24.

This years tournament will be played in scramble form with 40 teams of one professional and three amateurs. It will be a great chance for keen amateur players to share the course with big names like Sergio García, Gonzalo Fernández Castaño Álvaro Quirós, Pablo Larrazábal, José Manuel Lara, Luis Claverie, José María Cañizares, Juan Quirós, Marta Prieto and Paula Martí.

There will be a raffle and other fund raising events over the weekend and funds raised will be going to University of Salamanca (FICUS) and at Duke University in the US where María studied before she died of sarcoma cancer in 2005.

The Canarian Golf Federation set up the Ryder Cup style contest as a way to build ties between the two groups of enthusiasts and over the weekend of 15 and 16 October that spirit was always present amid some closely fought games. The El Salobre course in Las Palmas ensured that both teams enjoyed the unique challenge after successful seasons for each home circuit.

The seeds of victory were sown on the first day in the team play clashes as Tenerife ran up a 6.5 to 1.5 margin thanks to winning 6 of the 8 games with the mens premier category split. Things were a bit closer on the Sunday over mainly individual games that teed off from the 1st and 10th tee to ensure the flow of play. Tenerife kept ahead by 9.5 to 6.5 but there was a notable victory for Teresa Hernández and Marí Carmen Cabrera of the home side against Francisca Martín and María Isabel Cabrera.

The trophy was lifted by Tenerife but both sets of players enjoyed the experience and will be hungry to repeat or reverse the result next year.

Blessed with such great golf courses and plenty of good weather training time the Canary Islands is the ideal place to bring through new young players aspiring to join the professional ranks. Now the Canarian Golf Federation has set out a strategy to pick out the most promising players and polish them to become shine on the big stage.

Announcing their scheme in Las Palmas the federation explained that initially it would apply to the province of Gran Canaria but plans were well advanced to apply the same techniques to Tenerife very soon. Oscar Garzon an established professional player and part of the federations coaching team explained that young players were being chosen from the 11 to 25 year age range for two hour Saturday morning training schools under four technical coaches covering technique, physical and psychological training. The young golfers will be selected from the previous years rankings for Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Lessons will take place at the Las Palmeras golf course but once a month they get to experience another course in the Gran Canaria province.

Psychological coach for the programme, Heriberto Rodríguez, has helped many professional players and will pass on his knowledge to the students. That will include how to deal with pressures caused by the players own demanding standards as well as outside pressures during the course of a game. The future of Canarian golf is in good hands and we will hopefully see a new generation of professional players emerging.

As with their Tenerife hotels Bitacora, Vulcano, and Arona Gran, Springs playing guests were given a warm welcome with a goodie bag of a polo shirt, cap, and golf towel before the days play got underway in the stableford individual mode.

By the ninth hole the players had earned a pick up and home made pastries awaited them thanks to the buffet and drinks from the Arona Gran Hotel, one of those nice little touches that Spring Hoteles are noted for. The addition of such niceties didn’t mean that play was not competitive, the five categories pushed the local players to produce top drawer golf.

MENS WINNERS

First Category – Alexjandro Grande, 39 points off a 3 handicap

Second Category – Tomas Aramas, 40 points off 18 handicap

Third Category – Andres Guerra, 42 points off 20 handicap

WOMENS WINNERS

First Category – Maria Jerez, 39 points off 11 handicap

Second Category – Karin Beels – 37 points off 22 handicap

Each winner got a glass trophy and Alexjandro also got a luxury watch as top scratch player. The prize giving cocktail party was held at the Arona Gran Hotel in the evening giving players and partners a chance to slip into something smarter for the food, drink, and good company. Spring Hoteles made the day complete by donating prizes to the grand draw including a trip to the UK for 2 people including a weeks stay.
