Proud days at Maria Garcia Estrada Memorial Tournament

January 9, 2010

For the record, Spanish professional golfer Pablo Larrazabal led the winning quartet in the 2010 Maria Garcia Estrada Memorial Pro Am tournament at Abama Golf, but there were so many winners as 134,000 euros was raised for the Maria Garcia Estrada Foundation.

This was the third running of the event to commemorate the life of Santa Cruz born Maria, who died of cancer in September 2005 at the age of 24. Top names from Spanish golf descended on Guia de Isora for the 2 day competition on 8th and 9th January as good company, good golf and a good cause all came together.

WINNERS
The winning team was led by Pablo Larrazabal and included Anton Brufau, Jose Carceller, and Demetrio Carceller. They finished on 51 shots, 4 better than the runners up, led by professional Eduardo de la Riva, Carmen Alonso, Jose Rodriquez, Gonzalo Fernadez-Castaño, and Carlos Rodiles, who all tied on 55 strokes.

Among the visiting players was Joan Laporta, President of Barcelona football club, he arrived a few days before his team were due to play CD Tenerife in Santa Cruz. He thoroughly enjoyed the competition and took the opportunity to get to know the family and friends of Maria Garcia Estrada, and learnt more about the work the foundation has been doing.

BIDDING FOR GLORY
The grand total of 134,000 euros raised, included 18,830 euros from a star studded auction held before the event. On offer were football shirts donated by Christian Ronaldo and Leo Messi, but the big money went on a signed Sergio Garcia golf bag 3,000 euros and a staggering 4,500 euros for the tennis shoes worn by Rafa Nadal in Spains recent Davis Cup triumph.

A big thanks must go to the main sponsors, Tenerife Tourism and Abama Golf Resort, as well as everyone who supported the event.

Felicity Johnson wins Tenerife Ladies Open

September 27, 2009

After a neck and neck struggle with Wales Becky Brewerton, 22 year old Felicity Johnson from Birmingham won her first tournament in a tense finish at Golf Costa Adeje.

For Felicity it was all about perseverance as she reeled her rival in, starting 3 shots behind she clinched the title at the 18th hole to finish on 274, 14 under par. It was more heartbreak for Becky, she also finished runner up in 2003 and 2004.

Felicity made a storming run on the final 2 days and a 5 metre putt at the 17th hole swung the advantage her way on the final run in. Bettina Hauert of Germany finished third and the top amateur was Mireia Prat of Spain.

The top trios scores over the 4 days were

  • Felicity Johnson 69, 72, 66, 67  Total 274
  • Becky Brewerton 66, 69, 69, 72  Total 276
  • Bettina Hauert 69, 73, 67,72 Total 281

Speaking after her win, Felicity was full of praise for the course and her competitors, and was planning a big night out to celebrate, starting with Go Karting with her friends.

Anja Monke, sets Tenerife Ladies Open pace

September 24, 2009

Golf Costa Adeje was buzzing today as the 2009 Tenerife Ladies Open got underway in perfect conditions. Among the favourites to head the final push for the title is Anja Monke from Germany. The 30 year old from Herford threw down the gauntlet with a 7 under par round, finished in style with a 50 metre chip at the 18th hole. Anja smile was still broad as she spoke to us.

How was your preperation?
I played in the Randstad Open in Arras near Paris last week, I was defending my title but had to settle for joint third. I drove back to Hannover, where I live now, for a few days and then flew in to Tenerife 4 days ago.
Are you happy with the Golf Costa Adeje course?
This is my third time on this course and I warmed up yesterday by teaming up with some German friends in the Pro Am event. I have also played at Abama, Buenavista and Golf del Sur in the past.
Were you pleased with todays first round?
Yes, I felt relaxed and that was a nice way to end the round. There are a lot of very good players here but I will give it my best and see what happens.

You can follow Anja and all of the other players on the official tournament site www.tenerifeladiesopen.com, Facebook Flickr and Twitter, or if your German is passable, pop into her own website www.anjamonke.com.

What’s on Tenerife

Tenerife Ladies Open 2009

September 21, 2009

Growing in size and prestige every year, the Tenerife Ladies Open golf tournament 2009, returns to Golf Costa Adeje from September 24 to 27. It’s an exciting line up, England’s Rebecca Hudson (pic) is back to defend her title, won in a thrilling 3 hole play off with Anne Lise Caudal of France last year.Anne is also back, still smarting after missing out on the trophy and 45,000 euro cheque.

This years line up has a real international feel with 27 countries represented by 166 players. Some countries have just the one entrant, like Thailand, India, Korea and the Czech Republic. That international look will also be reflected in the visiting media, keen to relay play to all corners of the World.
It’s a modern course, and this year the coverage will be widely available on the internet through Facebook, Linked In and Hi5, plus the tournaments own detailed site.
