Telefonica Movistar tour heads for Las Americas climax

August 29, 2008

Just imagine a golf tournament spread over 5 months and the 8 main golf courses of Tenerife and La Gomera, the idea sounds exciting but the reality has been even better with some top class action for men and women. The second annual Circuit of Tenerife and La Gomera, sponsored by Telefonica Movistar, is about to reach its climax with the September 13 event at Golf Las Americas in Tenerife. The organisers, La Asociacion de Campos de Golf de Tenerife, have been thrilled with the rounds to date, and can’t wait for the first ball to be struck in the final round.

Abama Golf staged the lastest event on August 23, and as usual it was highly competitive. Enrique Pena Mendoza won the mens competition on 41 points with Luisa Fornies Fernandez del Castillo picking up the prize in the higher of the 2 womens categories on 38 points.

Buenavista winners

All the rounds were played under the stableford format, entrants had to be amateur, over 16 and holding an RFEG (Royal Federation of Spanish Golf) licence. It all started on May 10 at Buenavista Golf (winners group above) in the north west corner of Tenerife. Jose Manuel Hernandez Martin lifted the mens trophy on 38 points, and Maria Jose Rodero Sambeat was the pride of the women on 36 points. The action switched to the ancient El Penon, Royal Golf Club of Tenerife in Tacaronte for June 13 and this time both winners finished on 38 points, Jose Manuel Garcia Diaz and Katja Hintz Tort.

It was all aboard the ferry to La Gomera on June 28, for the round at Tecina Golf. This was a real tough day as the men had to play three rounds, Jose Manuel Hernandez Martin was a winner again, with a combined score of 108 while Guadalope Duran Aguilar triumphed for the ladies on 34 points. On July 12, Amarilla Golf was the venue, this time Santiago Garcia Campos led the way with 38 points and Luisa Fornies Fernandez del Castillo was womens champion.

Anything can happen in these tournaments, that was proved at Golf del Sur on July 26, a three way tie in the mens competition saw Claudio Omar Francioni, Isaac Morena Garcia and Santiago Rivero de la Cruz all rack up 39 points, the ladies contest had a clear winner in Susana Fernandez de Caleta on 39 points. The action was just as good at Golf Costa Adeje on August 9, this time Michael McQuade won with 39 points and Tania Juan Still on 37.

Golf Las Americas

The action just seems to get better so the finale at Golf Las Americas (above) is hotly anticipated and already the talk around the golf courses is about signing on for the 2009 tour as soon as possible.

Golf Costa Adeje to welcome McCartney and Clapton?

August 27, 2008

Keen golfers in Tenerife have long appreciated the fantastic setting of the Golf Costa Adeje course, rolling fairways that run down to the sea, plus palm trees and old stone walls, make it the perfect venue for a big gathering. It looks like this Decemeber 6 could herald A Wonderful Christmas Time, as musical legend Paul McCartney performs a selection from his decades of songs. If that wasn’t tempting enough, talks are already underway to welcome Eric Clapton for another mega concert in April 2009.

Golf Costa Adeje

The amphitheatre like driving range was the venue on January 24 for a concert by Sir Elton John, and it proved to be a huge musical success. Local company Canarias Live Sun Festival were behind that event and are also organising the Paul McCartney date and are close to finalising details. For the  Elton John concert the golf course became a 20,000 capacity showground and although there were some problems getting all the fans to their alloted places, it was the first such event and lessons will no doubt have been learned.

The golf course suffered very little, due to good preperation and covering of key areas, and there is no reason why these big concerts can’t become regular events. The artists are being carefully selected to appeal to a wide audience of all nationalities, the former Beatle would certainly pack them in, as would guitar hero Eric Clapton. More news will be posted here as details become confirmed.

Tenerife Golf Services keep you out of the rough

August 6, 2008

Which golf course, what game time, how do I get there, will it cost me a fortune in fees? All questions that run through a golfers mind when booking a holiday in a strange country. But golf is supposed to be a relaxing game, that’s why Paul and Sue Cooper set up Tenerife Golf Services.

Amarilla Golf

Dealing directly with the Tenerife golf courses on a regular basis, has built up a good understanding and trust which allows Tenerife Golf Services to offer discounted rates, no booking fees and no credit card fees. It’s a dedicated golf service from 2 keen players, Paul plays off a handicap of six. They can also arrange transport to and from the courses, club hire and any other special needs you may have.

It would take a lot to put Paul and Sue off their stroke, Sue was an air stewardess for 15 years with a top international airline, and later a financial director. Paul had one of the safest pairs of hands in football, in a 22 year career he was goalkeeper for Leicester City, Birmingham City, and Manchester City and most famously Ipswich Town, winning the F.A. Cup in 1978 and UEFA Cup in 1981. Paul’s speciality was penalty saves, he saved 56 during his career, earning the nickname of penalty king.

Paul and Sue moved to Tenerife in 1997, and with attention to detail and a personal touch, they have built the business to the success it is now. First time visitors and repeat customers have all found that they make sure that golf in Tenerife is stress free.

Jardin Tropical Trophy

August 6, 2008

It’s one of the longest established golf competitions in Tenerife, this year sees the 15th annual Jardin Tropical trophy, this year it is being held at Abama Golf in Guia de Isora on Saturday September 27. Abama is one of the best courses on the island and 150 players have been attracted by the latest challenge. Abama boasts so much more than golf, it has its own beach, tennis courts, a fitness and well being centre and much more, you can even buy property in the grounds.

Abama Golf

The action will take place over the stableford format and is split into 3 categories, one male and two for women. As for prize money, there is plenty to play for with 45,000 euros to be shared out, not just for the main winning places, but also for a range of special achievements. There will be rewards for best scratch player, best senior, the longest drive by a man and a woman, and a hole in one prize.

For those not familiar with the Hotel Jardin Tropical, it is a luxurious place to stay in Costa Adeje, click on their name for their website ot if you want to know more about Costa Adeje, click on its name.
